A Simple Ritual for the Spring Equinox and Ostara

March 20th 2023 signals the Spring Equinox and is the day where the hours of sunlight and darkness are equally matched before the days start to get longer as we move towards summer. This is a joyful time centred around rebirth and growth, where everything is starting to come to life again. It’s all about waking up to new ideas and dreams, both for the world and for our lives. This energy wants us to feel alive and inspired with all the new life starting to sprout in nature.

This time is also called Ostara, which comes from the Germanic lunar Goddess Ēostre, and is an embodiment of the Goddess who gave birth to the Sun God at the Winter Solstice. Ostara is recognised as a time of balance and equilibrium and celebrates the time between the darkest winter and the height of summer. This is also seen as the time when the Triple Moon Goddess moves from her innocent maiden stage towards her adult mother side with the potential for growth and fertility.

With the season of spring on the horizon, this is the perfect time to think about what seeds we want to plant and what we want to harvest come to the summertime.

Spring brings clarity so we want to get clear about where we want to direct our energy towards. If we aren’t clear, we can start to feel overwhelmed and like we’re being pulled in different directions. And this can lead to feeling burnt out and frazzled, which is not the energy we want to be bringing to summer!

With this in mind, we want to pay attention to any new ideas or avenues that we feel drawn towards, as this will give us clues as to where our energy wants to take us. This is also the perfect time to nurture our creativity and to think about what creative ideas we want to birth into the world. This is also a great time to look at where we’re feeling weighed down and what’s no longer serving us, as we want to feel buoyant and expansive for the upcoming summer months.

I’ve outlined before a simple ritual to honour the Equinox and Ostara, as well as a tarot spread to help you navigate this time:

Ritual to Honour Spring Equinox and Ostara

  • Take time to go for a mindful walk in nature. It doesn’t have to be an extravagant walk, it can just be to your local park. Notice what flowers you’re starting to see, the leaves on the trees that are starting to poke through. How does the air feel on your skin? Is it still cold with winter or are you starting to notice the warmth of spring?

  • As you take your walk and become more aware of your surroundings, is there anything that you're being pulled towards? Maybe a rock, a flower or leaves? Allow yourself to be guided by your curiosity and if it feels right, you can take one of these items back home with you.

  • Once back home, make yourself cosy with a hot drink, some blankets and some incense or candles. Grab your notebook and pen and answer these journal questions:

    1. What’s exciting you right now?

    2. Where’s your energy being drawn towards?

    3. Which seeds are you going to plant in the ground to tend & harvest?

    4. What habits or behaviours will stop you from getting there?

    5. Which parts of yourself have become overgrown?

  • Intention setting time! Now is the time to set some juicy intentions that will help bring those ideas to life. Remember: intentions aren't goals but are the paving stones we lay to help us achieve these goals. Think about it in terms of the person you want to be in pursuit of your goals. A simple one is if you want to eat healthier, your intention would be “I nourish my body in ways that feel good”.

    1. On a separate piece of paper, write 3-5 intentions based on your journal answers

    2. Intentions are positive action statements written in the present as if they have already happened

    3. Prompts: I choose, I deserve to, I nourish, When presented with x situation, I choose to react in x way

    4. Read your intentions aloud to give them more power!

  • Take some creative action! This can either be something big or something small, but it just gets the ball moving in the direction that we want to go in. Here are some ideas to help spring you into action (pun intended):

    1. Clear out your space and get rid of what no longer serves you or what’s weighing you down

    2. Create a dedicated altar space or focal point, decorating it with pieces that bring you joy. This can include the keepsake from your earlier walk.

    3. Create a vision board of what you’d like to see come to light or with images you are drawn to and place it somewhere you can see it.
